Why do they use the amount of money a movie makes to gauge its popularity.? Inflation rates would skew any validity to comparing the popularity of two movies by examining how much money it made in the Box office. Why do they not simply use ticket sales figures? |
Because if it was based on ticket sales or adjusted for inflation the number one movie would still be Gone With The Wind. And that would be dull as no movie released in today's multi-media environment could ever compete with a yester-year audience who could only see it in the cinema.
The reason they keep talking about the cash is:
Newpapers need stories to sell their papers. Good stories (such as a 3d sci fi actioner beating a sinking ship in the movies) are fed to the newspapers by the studios. Good stories generate good publicity. Good publicity generates ticket sales. Ticket sales generate income for the studios. Income is used to promote new movies in newspapers. And so on.
A bit cynical, that's the only reason why its still reported in that way. We all still love it though (apart from smart people like you and me). |
How powerful is a 12 gauge combat shotgun? Are they as powerful as claim or as powerful as Hollywood movies portray them? Like in movies when someone get shot/hit by a 12 gauge they immediately fly back and get killed right away.. |
Well no. They are as strong as any other shotgun. They just have a "combat" designation. They all use the same kinds of ammo. A clode range chest shot with buckshot would probably kill someone but they would not fly.
Hollywood is a poor source to get information of firearms. The biggest source to never trust though are anti-gunners and democrats. |
What western movie does one of the main characters use a 12 gauge shotgun the whole time? I originally thought it was Kevin Costner in Open Range, but thats not it. |
| Silverado |

Does a gauge exist for destruction? I believe storms & Earthquakes have a gauge don't they. Example: In the movie "Cradle to the Grave", the bad guys were trying to guage the stones destruction rate. If a new destruction weapon is created, how would they guage it. How would they guage a LASER weapon? How are guns guaged? I believe swinging a sword has a guage. |
There are many different measures for destructive ability.
Typically this is measured in units of energy. For bullets, they measure the kinetic energy of the bullet which is then given in Joules (a measure of energy). For atomic bombs the common measure is kilo-tons which is a measure of energy as well that can be converted to Joules (just a whole lot of them). A kilo-ton is about 4,200,000,000,000 Joules. A .45 bullet has about 450 Joules.
Lasers also impart energy on their targets. The measure is typically in megawatts. A megawatt is 1,000,000 Joules per second that it is applied.
The number of Joules doesn't tell you quite enough though. The reason is because a single Joule of energy well aimed, could kill a person, but if you go out running in the sun, you will receive thousands of Joules in a short period of time from the Sun (which is obviously not destroying you).
The amount of energy that it takes to heat a cup of coffee is considerably more than the amount of energy it takes to fire most bullets, yet you can safely drink the coffee and the energy contained (as heat) within it. |
How would you gauge the best movie in the world? Do you consider the best movie as more popular? By gross? By longevity? Should their be some sort of historical relevance to the movie? I would guess that an older movie, say Gone With The Wind, is more popular than Titanic, just by its oldness (more people have seen it than Titanic). GWTW may even have made more money, allowing for inflation.
Yet The Dark Knight has made a ton of money and with time may make more then Titanic. But The Dark Knight hasn’t won more awards than Titanic or GWTW. That to me says that overall The Dark Knight isn’t as superior, creatively speaking, than the other two.
I’m not suggesting that either of these movies are the “best movie of all time”, they are just examples. I’m just wondering what criteria other people place their top films.
Lets hear your top films and why you think they are. |
| the greatest movie of all time is never based on box office or awards. its based on quality of film. thats it. a good film should above all be memorable. it should have a great script, good acting, good production values etc. i dont believe a great film needs to have a solid story. some of my favourite movies dont have much of a plot eg. mulholland drive, lost in translation. as long as you feel what the characters feel, their journey will serve as plot. tiranic and gone with the wind are obviously not the best films of all time. neither is the lord of the rings. the dark knight is one of the best movies because its a brilliant movie with all of the qualities listed, not because it made a lot of money and in spite of its lack of awards. if its a movie that you watch that is memorable after years and makes you think about it even when you're not watching it, its a good movie. if it does that for a lot of people, its a great movie |
I have a 1994 Ford Explorer and the fuel gauge is not work.? is kinda work for the fact that when it is off it is on empty but when i turn it on it movies but not allot and it is still on empty. can th explorer have a fuse that is bad or maybe a gas censor. |
Reset the computer, unhook the positive(red) wire from the battery leave it like that for about an hour
If that don't work then the gauge on the fuel pump is no good you'll need a new fuel pump |
What are some good movies for this...? ok so my best friend in the whole world, daniel, finally is getting the courage to 'come out'. he plans to watch a movie with his mom and dad, but it needs to be about homosexuality. he's gonna pretend to have picked it randomly and gauge his parents re-actions. then he'll tell them himself.
problem is, niether of us know of any homosexual movies. it doesnt matter it its lesbians or gays. please help
ps- this is how he is choosing to come out, please be respectful.:]
thanks so much in advance!:] |

Depth Perception- uses both eyes- how does a camera lense allow depth perception? Watching a show about our eyes last night, I heard that with the slightly different images our eyes capture our brain puts them together and that is the basis of depth perception. How, then, with cameras, can we still gauge how far away things are in pictures and in movies, since cameras have only one image to capture? Is it mainly just using reference objects that we know the size of roughly, like humans or cars to guess how far something in a picture is? Did that make any sense? |
| Yup, you pretty much have the answer. Without stereoscopic (with two eyes) vision, the brain falls back to other cues like relative size (things farther away look smaller) and occlusion (things behind get partially hidden by things in front). Lighting also plays an important role, like the location of highlights and shadows. There are also a few more subtle cues, like objects appear hazier and slightly bluish when they are far away. |
What was the year and model of the Stevens three-trigger side-by-side 10-gauge shotgun used by Wyatt Earp? As seen in the movie "Tombstone" |
Wyatt used a 3-trigger Stevens 10 gauge double.
Go here... they chat about it.
